4A Region 5 recap Oct. 17, 2012
Keon Howard and Chris Horne provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Newton County. The connection went for 93 yards, the longest such play in 4A Region 5 this season.
This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
Laurel's dynamic duo of Howard and Ocatvious Cooley proved tough for the Cougars to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Howard threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns and Cooley had 119 yards receiving. Horne helped Laurel's passing attack out by catching two balls for 102 yards.
Franklin Jones was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 178 yards on 31 carries as Quitman defeated Newton County. Josh Davis also contributed to the rushing game with 109 yards on the ground.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Quitman takes on second place Northeast Jones. The Panthers topped West Lauderdale last week, while the Tigers.
Next week's game between Quitman and Northeast Jones will feature a tantalizing aerial matchup as Jones tests his arm against Jaylon Keys's defensive ability. For the year, Steven Bynum's team's Jones has managed 1130 yards and eight touchdowns, while Keys has seven interceptions for Keith Braddock's team.
There should be lots of points scored when the Panthers and the Tigers face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Quitman comes in having scored 316 this season, while Northeast Jones has scored 243. The Panthers scored 28 points last week as they bested the Knights.
