Midd-West and Mount Carmel are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will be playing in front of their home fans against the Tornadoes at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
Midd-West couldn't beat Newport on Thursday even though they stacked four runs on them in the fifth inning. The Mustangs came up short against the Buffaloes, falling 14-4. The Mustangs haven't had much luck with the Buffaloes recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Midd-West saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Braxton Smith, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Derek Wert also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Mount Carmel strolled into their game on Friday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They put the hurt on Central Columbia with a sharp 19-7 victory. Considering the Tornadoes have won seven contests by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Lukas Carpenter made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Brody Brinkash was incredible, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with four runs, three RBI, and one triple. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Delaney, who went 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
Mount Carmel was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .382. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.
Midd-West now has a losing record of 3-4. As for Mount Carmel, their win bumped their record up to 8-0.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Midd-West has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mount Carmel struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
