McDowell and Erwin are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2017, but not for long. The McDowell Titans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Erwin Warriors at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (McDowell has six straight victories, Erwin has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
McDowell put the finishing touches on their 16th blowout victory of the season on Friday. They blew past Asheville, posting a 81-36 victory at home. Given McDowell's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 46th, while Asheville is ranked 167th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
McDowell's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kensly Stewart led the charge by scoring 20 points. Another player making a difference was Khloe Joyner, who scored 15 points.
Meanwhile, Erwin had to suffer through a rough 66-37 loss at the hands of A.C. Reynolds. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Erwin in their matchups with A.C. Reynolds: they've now lost four in a row.
McDowell is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 19-3 record this season. As for Erwin, they dropped their record down to 11-10 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight at home.
Everything came up roses for McDowell against Erwin when the teams last played last Wednesday as the squad secured a 63-28 victory. Does McDowell have another victory up their sleeve, or will Erwin turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
