No. 4
Allen (Texas) was no match for No. 25
Westlake (Austin, Texas) in the 6A-I semifinals at Waco ISD Stadium in a 23-17 loss.
Westlake jumped out to a 9-0 lead after one quarter and it was 16-0 at halftime. A 31-yard field goal got Westlake on the board with 9:05 left in the first quarter and then Texas commit
Sam Ehlinger hit
Kylen Granson with a pass up the middle that ended up going for 70 yards to make it 9-0. A 7-yard punt deep in Allen territory gave the Chaparrals a short field and they capitalized with a 4-yard pass to Granson that made it 16-0.
An Allen fumble put Westlake in great position again in the early moments of the third quarter and
Chase Cokley snagged a 23-yard scoring pass from Ehlinger to make it 23-0. A 63-yard pass got Allen deep into Westlake territory but the defense held, resulting in a 22-yard field goal from
Connor Limpert to make it 23-3.
That score stood into the fourth quarter.
With 4:15 left, the Eagles made it 23-10 with a 3-yard pass from
Seth Green to
Camden Harrison. Then Westlake recovered the ensuing onside kick, seemingly ending Allen's hopes.
But
Jaylon Jones came up huge, taking an interception from the end zone all the way to a score with 1:46 left to narrow the gap to 23-17. Allen had two timeouts left but Westlake earned a first down and put the game away. It ended the nation's third-longest win streak, behind Pahranagat Valley (Alamo, Nev.) at 93 and Edgewood Academy (Elmore, Ala.) at 71. Since Pahranagat Valley is an 8-man program, Allen's streak was No. 2 among 11-man programs.
Westlake coach Todd Dodge knows a few things about long win streaks. He once led Southlake Carroll to a 49-game string of wins in the mid-2000's.
