The Weeki Wachee Hornets were the 52-34 winner over the Lecanto Panthers when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Weeki Wachee fell to Lecanto 40-34.
Despite the loss, Weeki Wachee had strong showings from Paige Atwater, who scored 14 points along with three steals, and Joelys Rodriguez, who scored nine points along with four steals. Another player making a difference was Marlee Schumacher, who scored three points along with seven rebounds and five blocks.
Lecanto got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Bryleigh Florio out in front who scored 18 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which Florio has scored at least 25% of Lecanto's points. Ijyana Edwards was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Weeki Wachee's loss ended a seven-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-5. As for Lecanto, their win bumped their record up to 9-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Weeki Wachee won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against The Villages Charter at 7:30 p.m. on January 11th. Hopefully The Villages Charter focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 31 last Saturday. As for Lecanto, they will be playing at home against Hernando at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
