Maryn Huber made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted over her last nine matches. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, one triple, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Felicity Drake was a standout: she scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. She also hit a triple, marking her first of the season. Maddox Bazley was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.
Newman always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .651. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .583 or higher in five consecutive games.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's Academy made easy work of Cohen on Tuesday and carried off a 26-4 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cougars.
Chloe Harris and Samia Siddiq did most of the damage at the plate: Harris went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, two triples, and four RBI, while Siddiq scored three runs and stole four bases while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Nave Batiste, who scored two runs and stole six bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Newman pushed their record up to 11-7 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for St. Mary's Academy, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 7-4-1.
St. Mary's Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Newman has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.4 hits per game. It's a different story for St. Mary's Academy, though, as they've been averaging 8.9 hits. Given Newman's sizable advantage in that area, the Cougars will need to find a way to close that gap.
Newman took their victory against St. Mary's Academy in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 19-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Greenies since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
