The Hueytown Golden Gophers just played last yesterday, but they'll still welcome the Pelham Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hueytown has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the game with six straight defeats, while Pelham will come in with three straight victories.
On Monday, Hueytown ended up a good deal behind Shades Valley and lost 50-36. While losing is never fun, the Golden Gophers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 292nd, while the Mounties are ranked 67th).
Despite the loss, Hueytown had strong showings from Jatoria Duncan, who posted six points and four steals, and Arkia Johnson, who had four points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Pelham). They claimed a resounding 77-35 win over Calera. With the Panthers ahead 41-19 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Hueytown better focus on containing Tee King and Ally Barfield as the pair were huge in Pelham's win. King dropped a triple-double with 16 points, ten boards, and ten assists, while Barfield shot 53% from the field en route to 23 points and six rebounds. Those ten assists gave King a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Janiah Harris, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and ten boards.
Pelham was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They are a perfect 5-0 when they've passed the ball that well.
Hueytown's defeat dropped their record down to 1-12. As for Pelham, their victory bumped their record up to 7-4.
Hueytown ended up a good deal behind Pelham in their previous meeting back in November, losing 49-34. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of King, who earned 14 points in addition to seven steals and five assists. Now that the Golden Gophers know the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
