Baseball Recap: Whiting Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Whiting had to endure a 17-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They were the clear victors by a 16-2 margin over the Gary West Side Cougars on Friday. The Oilers' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Alex Rodriguez made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and only one walk). Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.

In other pitching news, Jay Lopez looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.

Back at the plate, Whiting got a massive performance out of Noah Cruz, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with five stolen bases and four runs. Those five stolen bases gave Cruz a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sean Steele, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.

Whiting always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .697. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Whiting's victory bumped their record up to 2-19. As for Gary West Side, their loss was their 14th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-10.

Coming up, Whiting will welcome Calumet New Tech at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Gary West Side, they will head out to square off against Hammond Morton at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Governors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.45 runs per game on average), something the Cougars will no doubt try to take advantage of.
