Baseball Game Preview: Somers Spartans vs. Plainville Blue Devils

Somers and Plainville are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Spartans will venture away from home to face off against the Blue Devils at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Plainville took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Somers, who comes in off a win.

Somers barely beat East Granby the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Spartans were the clear victors by a 20-7 margin over the Crusaders on Tuesday. Considering the Spartans have won eight matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Josh Giupponi was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over 5.2 innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Somers got a massive performance out of Andrew Czerwinski, who went 4-for-5 with four stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles. That's the most hits Czerwinski has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Olearcek, who got on base in four of his six plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI.

Meanwhile, Plainville fell victim to Southington and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They lost 7-0 to the Blue Knights. The Blue Devils just can't catch a break and have now endured three losses in a row.

Somers has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Plainville, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-12.

Somers came up short against Plainville in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, falling 6-1. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
