The Ward Melville Patriots took care of business in their home opener on Tuesday (barely). They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past William Floyd 45-42. This was payback for Ward Melville, who suffered a 47-34 loss the last time these two teams met.
Despite the loss, William Floyd still got an impressive performance from Kayla Gilmore, who scored 23 points along with seven steals and five rebounds. Gilmore scored a full 54.8% of William Floyd's points, the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacqueline Sutherland, who scored seven points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Ward Melville's victory bumped their record up to 1-0. As for William Floyd, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-1.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Ward Melville will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Walt Whitman at 4:15 p.m. on January 12, 2024. As for William Floyd, they will be playing at home against Riverhead at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
