The Howard Wildcats waltzed into their game Thursday with two straight wins but they left with three. They took their match on the road with ease, bagging a 87-33 win over Newark. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 63-22.
Howard was led to victory by Jamal Johnson and Teion Jenkins. Johnson scored 14 points along with three steals, while Jenkins scored 11 points along with seven assists and five steals. Jenkins is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Kaden Brown, who scored 12 points along with five steals.
Howard pushed their record up to 3-0 with that win, which was their third straight on the road dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 77.0 points per game. As for Newark, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-5.
Howard will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Cane Bay at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cane Bay will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 98th in South Carolina, while Howard is ranked sixth in Delaware). Newark will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Odessa at 4:45 p.m. on January 5, 2024. Odessa knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past six matches -- so hopefully Newark likes a good challenge.
