Escondido (Calif.) grabbed the lead when
Mitch Bartram ran for a touchdown with under a minute left in the fourth quarter and held on to upset
Vista (Calif.) 31-27 on Saturday. The score was the final lead change in a back-and-forth contest that featured five lead swaps.
Each side put up 10 points during the third quarter, and the fourth quarter began with the margin still at four.
The Cougars' Bartram scored two touchdowns on the ground in the victory.
Bartram played well for Escondido in the victory. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns. He has now scored six touchdowns on the season.
Jesse Tellez played well for the Panthers. The junior kicked two field goals and three extra points.
The victory will ease some of the sting of EHS's close 14-13 loss to Vista last season.
The loss comes after Vista defeated Torrey Pines 2-0 last week. The loss snapped VHS's 2-game winning streak.
Escondido (3-2) goes up against Mission Hills in a Avocado - East game matchup next week, while Vista (2-3) locks horns with Rancho Buena Vista in a non-conference game.
