With a playoff win on the line, St. Margaret rose to the challenge on Friday. In a tight game that could have gone either way, they made off with a 16-15 victory over the Redlands East Valley Wildcats. Winning may never get old, but the Tartans sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
St. Margaret's didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Nathan Smith and Sebastian Salazar. Smith has been hot recently, having also posted five or more total tackles the last three times he's played. Salazar got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Redlands East Valley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Hunter Goettel, who rushed for 82 yards on only seven carries. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 51 yards. Taamir Mack also helped out with an impressive 84 receiving yards.
St. Margaret's win bumped their record up to 7-4. As for Redlands East Valley, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-5 record this season.
