5A Region III District 20 recap September 24, 2013
Madison scaled the state rankings by moving to 497 from 533 this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region III District 20. The Marlins climbed the ranks as a result of losing to North Shore 51-0.
Bellaire and Port Arthur Memorial played the most contested game in the league this week, with Bellaire eventually emerging with a 45-42 victory. Trevon Smith threw for 155 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for 117 yards during the win.
Ryheem Malone was the best wideout in the league this week as the Cardinals topped the Titans. Malone tallied 6 receptions for 105 yards.
Michael Haywood put up the best numbers through the air as Westside bested Fort Bend Kempner. He finished with 13 completions for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns. Haywood's favorite target this week was Bobby Hartzog, who caught 6 passes for 82 yards.
He was 13-22 with 2 interceptions.
Haywood was the most successful running back in 5A Region III District 20 this week. In 14 carries, he ran for 190 yards as the Wolves beat Port Arthur Memorial. Loren Easly also contributed to the rushing game with 107 yards on the ground.
Westside's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Wolves feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Haywood has thrown for 846 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, while Hartzog has 23 catches for 508 yards. Haywood also leads the league in rushing with 393 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Lamar takes on Westbury. As it stands, the Redskins are in first, while the Rebels are in fourth.
