Cienega and Tucson High Magnet School are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Bobcats will square off against the Badgers at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Tucson High Magnet School will face off against a team with plenty of momentum: Cienega extended their winning streak to seven on Tuesday. The Bobcats put the hurt on Nogales with a sharp 16-1 win.
The team relied heavily on Micaela Valenzuela, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Katie Lutton also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Cienega was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .476. They are a perfect 16-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Tucson High Magnet School made easy work of Rincon/University on Monday and carried off a 17-1 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Badgers.
Evannie Flores tossed a big game, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Tucson High Magnet School got a massive performance out of Alyssa Torres, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI Torres has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Claudeona Lesley, who scored two runs while going 4-for-4.
Cienega pushed their record up to 20-6 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Tucson High Magnet School, their record is now 16-8.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Cienega hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Tucson High Magnet School struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Cienega came out on top in a nail-biter against Tucson High Magnet School in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, sneaking past 3-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bobcats since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
