The Coxsackie-Athens Riverhawks will head out on the road to challenge the Broadalbin-Perth Patriots at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Coxsackie-Athens is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
Coxsackie-Athens came out on top against Albany Academy for Boys on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run sixth inning. The Riverhawks blew past the Cadets 9-1. The victory was nothing new for the Riverhawks as they're now sitting on three straight.
Coxsackie-Athens got a massive performance out of Andrew Sager, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Slater, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.
Broadalbin-Perth not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since April 7th (when they won 14-4). They put the hurt on Amsterdam with a sharp 11-3 win. The victory continues a trend for the Patriots in their matchups with the Rams: they've now won four in a row.
Broadalbin-Perth saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Blake Shields, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs. Shields is becoming a predictor of the Patriots' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 7-9 when he doesn't). Brady Vanvoast also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Broadalbin-Perth always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. The last time their OBP was this high was was before the start of last season.
Coxsackie-Athens pushed their record up to 15-4 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Broadalbin-Perth, they now have a winning record of 10-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Coxsackie-Athens has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Broadalbin-Perth struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Coxsackie-Athens took their win against Broadalbin-Perth in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-4 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Riverhawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
