The Los Altos Eagles will face off against the Homestead Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Los Altos is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
If Los Altos beats Homestead with five runs on Thursday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. The Eagles beat Mountain View on Tuesday by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 5-2. The game was the first time the Eagles have beaten the Spartans on their field since May 4, 2022.
Kaylyn Cox spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on ten hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Sabrina Neal, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Whiting, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run.
Meanwhile, Homestead had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. They never let the Firebirds get on the board and left with an 8-0 win.
The result came thanks to Mackenzie Smith's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Elisa Coyle was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Cierra Hagan, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Homestead's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-4. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Los Altos, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-9.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Los Altos hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. However, it's not like Homestead struggles in that department as they've averaged .326. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Los Altos came up short against Homestead when the teams last played back in April, falling 8-3. Will the Eagles have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
