The Apollo Hawks will take on the Pinnacle Pioneers at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Apollo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Apollo is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Tolleson just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Wolverines by a score of 4-3.
Jesus Beltran was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. What's more, he gave up only three hits, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Diego Ramos was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Pinnacle fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Mountain Ridge on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 13-9 to the Mountain Lions. The Pioneers have struggled against the Mountain Lions recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost meeting.
Erik Moo made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 4-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Pinnacle is 2-1 when Moo posts three or more RBI, but 7-8-1 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabe Velasquez-Mendoza, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Apollo's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 14-5. As for Pinnacle, their loss dropped their record down to 9-9-1.
Apollo's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's contest. The Hawks have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Pinnacle, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Apollo continue to outrun the ball?
Apollo came up short against Pinnacle when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 6-2. Can the Hawks avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
