The Morgantown Mohigans will head out on the road to face off against the Wheeling Park Patriots at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Morgantown is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.
Morgantown is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Weir, who was ranked 21st at the time (Morgantown was ranked 12th). The Mohigans came out on top against the Red Riders by a score of 4-1 on Monday.
MADISON WISMAN made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on KIRA SMITH, who went 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Another player making a difference was LIZ ALSOP, who went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Wheeling Park hadn't done well against John Marshall recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Patriots were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Monarchs. The Patriots might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by six runs or more this season.
Like Morgantown, Wheeling Park also got a great game from a two-way player: Delaney Randolph. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off nine hits. Randolph was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Bryn Ernest was incredible, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. That's the most runs she has posted over her last ten games. Grace Tamburin was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4.
Morgantown pushed their record up to 11-8 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Wheeling Park, their record now sits at 8-9.
Everything went Morgantown's way against Wheeling Park in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Morgantown made off with an 18-2 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mohigans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
