Basketball Recap: Calverton Takes a Loss

If Calverton was riding high fresh off their 82-58 takedown of The Lab School of Washington last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Calverton were beaten by the Southern Maryland Christian Academy Mustangs 72-31 on Thursday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Calverton of the 78-28 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2020.

Despite the loss, Calverton still got an impressive performance from Justus Washington, who went 5 for 12 on his way to 14 points and eight rebounds. Washington is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jonathan Nash, who posted eight points and six rebounds.

Southern Maryland Christian Academy's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Johnie Griffin Lll, who went 8 of 17 on his way to 17 points and five assists. Aaron McGlone was another key player, going 8 of 14 on his way to 16 points.

Calverton now has a losing record at 2-3. As for Southern Maryland Christian Academy, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Calverton won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Perry Hall Christian at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Southern Maryland Christian Academy, they will welcome Fairfax HomeSchool at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
