The South Fork Cubs have been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They received a tough blow on Saturday as they fell 66-50 to Ukiah. While losing is never fun, South Fork can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 383rd, while Ukiah is ranked 149th).
When it comes to explaining why South Fork lost, one person who can't be blamed is Tommy Rotbergs. Despite the final result, he scored 19 points. Rotbergs scored a full 38% of South Fork's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Shevy Bero-Van Meter was another key contributor, scoring six points.
Omaurie Phillips-Porter was his usual excellent self, scoring 17 points along with five assists and five steals for Ukiah. The matchup was Phillips-Porter's seventh in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tony Zacarias, who scored 15 points.
South Fork's loss dropped their record down to 6-2. As for Ukiah, their victory bumped their record up to 8-2.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. South Fork and Point Arena will face off at 6:30 p.m. on December 14th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Point Arena focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Saturday. As for Ukiah, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Maria Carrillo at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
