The Lytle Pirates will face off against the Hondo Owls at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Lytle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.
Lytle took a ten-run loss the last time they faced off against Dilley, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Lytle had just enough and edged out Dilley 6-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Pirates have posted against the Wolves since March 17, 2022.
Claire Canales spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on nine hits. What's more, she posted three strikeouts, the most she's had since back in February.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Giselle Esparza, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Spenger, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Hondo). They blew past Crystal City 18-9 on Tuesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Owls.
Hondo also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Rebecca Rubio gave up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs on five hits and racked up ten Ks. With that strong performance, Rubio is now averaging an impressive 5.5 strikeouts per game.
On the hitting side, Ainsley Bohlen was incredible, firing off two home runs and six RBI while going 2-for-5. Another player making a difference was Briley Krisch, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
Hondo hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Crystal City struck out 11 times.
The win got Lytle back to even at 8-8-1. As for Hondo, their victory bumped their record up to 9-7.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Lytle hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .330. However, it's not like Hondo struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lytle might still be hurting after the 17-6 defeat they got from Hondo in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Lytle avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
