Baseball Recap: Golden Gate Takes a Loss

Golden Gate had lost nine straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped down to 6-12 to make it ten. They lost 10-0 to the Palmetto Ridge Bears. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bears this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-5 back in February.

Golden Gate saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Dylan Nieves, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base. Nieves has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.

As for Palmetto Ridge, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games.

On Palmetto Ridge's side, Gregory Carrasco made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Carrasco also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Palmetto Ridge is 4-2 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise. Carrasco was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Nico Benedetto was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. He is becoming a predictor of Palmetto Ridge's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 6-8 when he doesn't). Jayden Herrera was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Golden Gate will head out on the road to challenge Gateway Charter at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Palmetto Ridge, they will challenge First Baptist Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
