The Buena Colts will square off against the Flowing Wells Caballeros at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Buena is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Desert View just ended the team's 11-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Jaguars by a score of 12-10. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Aidan Barrett was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Aaron Cortes was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Flowing Wells won against Pueblo on Tuesday with 12 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Caballeros beat the Warriors by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 12-2. The game was the first time the Caballeros have beaten the Warriors on their field since April 28, 2021.
Yandel Rios-Arvayo was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Rios-Arvayo was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
In other batting news, Brady Vanderlaske and Adrian Soto did most of the damage at the plate: Vanderlaske got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Soto went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Those three RBI gave Soto a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bruce Gonzalez, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Flowing Wells was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pueblo only posted a batting average of .238.
The victory made it two in a row for Flowing Wells and bumps their season record up to 8-16-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Buena, their defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 18-6.
Flowing Wells' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Buena hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .351. It's a different story for Flowing Wells, though, as they've only averaged .215. Will they be able to contain Buena's hitters?
Buena was able to grind out a solid victory over Flowing Wells in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, winning 10-5. Will the Colts repeat their success, or do the Caballeros have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
