Centennial is on a 24-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Mayfield is on a four-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Hawks will host the Trojans at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Centennial 2.8, Mayfield 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Centennial is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over Atrisco Heritage Academy. The result was nothing new for the Hawks, who have now won 22 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Destiny Perez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Centennial let Stevie Jimenez and Brooklyn Milam run wild. Jimenez went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI, while Milam went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Kendra Martinez, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Centennial always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .586. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Atrisco Heritage Academy only posted an OBP of .250.
Meanwhile, Mayfield faced Carlsbad in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Trojans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 win over the Cavemen/Cavegirls. The victory continues a trend for the Trojans in their matchups with the Cavemen/Cavegirls: they've now won six in a row.
Centennial's win bumped their record up to 27-0. As for Mayfield, their victory bumped their record up to 21-6.
Everything went Centennial's way against Mayfield in their previous matchup back in April, as Centennial made off with a 13-3 win. Do the Hawks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
