Lamar is 8-2 against Buena Vista since January of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The two teams will compete for holiday cheer at 3:00 p.m. The matchup will give Lamar their first taste of in-conference action this season.
Lamar's tournament run continued when they took on Jefferson Academy on Saturday. The Thunder had to suffer through a 45-12 loss at the hands of the Jaguars. The Thunder have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Mireya Gomez was Lamar's leading scorer, having posted eight points. Lexie Lubbers took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with three assists.
Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Buena Vista over Lake County in every quarter on their way to victory on Tuesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Demons blew the Panthers out of the water with a 53-19 final score. That 34 point margin sets a new team best for the Demons this season.
Buena Vista's win came from a few key players Lamar will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Adeline Smith, who almost dropped a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Those 11 points gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Liz Molitor, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards.
Buena Vista was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lake County only posted three.
The victory made it two in a row for Buena Vista and bumps their season record up to 3-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 52 points in those games. As for Lamar, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Lamar has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 22.3 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Buena Vista struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 27 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Lamar beat Buena Vista 26-14 in their previous matchup back in December of 2024. Will the Thunder repeat their success, or do the Demons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
