Waccamaw is 1-9 against Loris since March of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. Waccamaw will host Loris at 6:30 p.m. Waccamaw is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Waccamaw took a 11-run loss the last time they faced off against Marlboro County, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Waccamaw had just enough and edged out Marlboro County 6-5.
Reese Rutkowski made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Rutkowski was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Elizabeth Ashcraft, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Baylee Dockery, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
Waccamaw hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in four consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Loris was able to grind out a solid victory over Chardon on Wednesday, taking the game 9-5. That's two games straight that the Lions have won by exactly four runs.
Like Waccamaw, Loris also got a great game from a two-way player: Jessie Cartrette. She tossed 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Cartrette was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while going 2-for-5. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February.
In other batting news, Haley Spence was incredible, going 4-for-5 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March of 2024. Caitie Black was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Loris now has a winning record of 6-5-1. As for Waccamaw, their win ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Waccamaw has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Loris struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Waccamaw suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Loris in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Waccamaw avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
