The Boardman Spartans will head out on the road to take on the Salem Quakers at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Boardman focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Monday.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up ten more assists than your opponent, a fact Boardman proved. They took down John F. Kennedy Catholic 62-47. Given Boardman's advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 54th, while John F. Kennedy Catholic is ranked 210th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Boardman got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Mary catherine Werth out in front who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Werth has scored all season. Sarah Bero was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Salem fought the good fight in their overtime game against Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 53-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lions. Salem has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Boardman is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season. As for Salem, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season.
Boardman ended up a good deal behind Salem when the teams last played back in December of 2022, losing 43-28. Can Boardman avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
