Baseball Recap: Hug Starts Season with Victory at Home

Hug gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Saturday. They blew past the Virginia City Muckers 9-2. This was payback for the Hawks, who suffered a 9-3 loss the last time these two teams met.

Silas Stephens made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Stephens was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. What's more, he posted two hits, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Santiago Chavez was a standout: he scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Alexander Alvarez was another key player, scoring a run and stealing three bases while going 1-for-2.

Hug always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Virginia City only posted an OBP of .381.

Virginia City dropped their record down to 0-4-1 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Coincidentally, Hug and Virginia City will both be playing Portola the next time they take the field. Virginia City will host Portola at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Hug will play them later in the day, at 10:00 a.m.
