The Smyrna Eagles will venture away from home to challenge the Caravel Academy Buccaneers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Smyrna has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Caravel Academy will arrive with four straight wins.
Smyrna fell victim to Indian River and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 4-0 to the Braves, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.
Smyrna got a good showing from Nick Campbell, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
At the plate, Smyrna saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Dylan Oakley, who went 1-for-3 with one triple.
Meanwhile, Caravel Academy's rock-solid pitcher showed up for the team's fourth consecutive shutout on Thursday. Everything went their way against Middletown as they made off with an 8-0 victory. The game marked the Buccaneers' most dominant win of the season so far.
Orvy Potts was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out eight over seven innings pitched. Potts was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, Gavin Evans was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Quinn Hamrick, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Caravel Academy's victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-0. As for Smyrna, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-3.
Everything went Smyrna's way against Caravel Academy in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Smyrna made off with an 11-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
