Basketball Game Preview: Wells Wells CSD vs. Sharon Springs Central Spartans

The Wells Wells CSD will be taking part in a tournament against the Sharon Springs Central Spartans at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in Wells' favor as the squad sits on four straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Sharon Springs Central has been banged up by ten consecutive losses on the road also dating back to last season.

Wells' tournament run continued when they took on Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville on Saturday. Wells walked away with a 69-58 win over Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville. Given the Wells CSD's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 261st, while the Wolves are ranked 550th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Wells' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Evan Mutz, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and 20 boards. Mutz is crushing it when it comes to rebounds: he's pulled down at least nine every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Hunter Passmore, who dropped a triple-double on 13 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Meanwhile, Sharon Springs Central came into Wednesday's game having lost 18 straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They secured a 52-48 W over Milford Central two weeks ago. The Spartans' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Wells is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. As for Sharon Springs Central, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-3.

Wells beat Sharon Springs Central 55-47 in their previous meeting back in November of 2023. Does Wells have another victory up their sleeve, or will Sharon Springs Central turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
