Marley Caldwell made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Notre Dame Prep let Maggie Spokas and Kendall Gillham run wild. Spokas went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Gillham went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs. That's the most runs Gillham has posted since back in March.
Meanwhile, Xavier College Prep's rock-solid pitcher showed up for the team's fifth consecutive shutout on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over Sunnyslope. The result was nothing new for the Gators, who have now won 17 games by six runs or more so far this season.
Like Notre Dame Prep, Xavier College Prep also got a great game from a two-way player: Sydney Root. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 18 over seven innings pitched. Root was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Sariah McNabb was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Noelani Romo was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs.
Xavier College Prep hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in three consecutive contests.
Notre Dame Prep's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-6. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Xavier College Prep, their record now sits at 18-5-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Notre Dame Prep has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Xavier College Prep struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 10.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
