He has become a key player for Heritage: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 7-9 otherwise. Small was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Heritage got a good showing from Kanen Pritchard, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
Meanwhile, Wakefield made easy work of Wake Prep Academy on Wednesday and carried off a 12-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Wolverines, who have now won seven games by six runs or more so far this season.
Blake Waltman looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Mikey Katz was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-2. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Thomas Piscorik, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2.
Wakefield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wake Prep Academy only managed three hits.
Wakefield has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games. As for Heritage, they now have a losing record of 9-10.
Heritage's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Huskies have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Wakefield, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Heritage continue to outrun the ball?
Heritage couldn't quite finish off Wakefield in their previous meeting on Monday and fell 5-3. Will the Huskies have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other baseball content.
