5A Region 2 recap Oct. 3, 2012
Russell's Briquez Alvies recorded the longest rushing play in 5A Region 2 this season in his game against Talladega last week. Alvies scampered for 95 yards on the play and finished with 99 on the day as his team topped the Tigers.
Booker T. Washington moved up to 255 from 282 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 33-12 win over Bullock County helped the Golden Eagles improve their standing.
Bryant Horn put up the best numbers through the air as Russell beat Talladega. He finished with a total of six completions for 139 yards and one touchdown. Horn's favorite target this week was Alvies, who caught two passes for 48 yards.
JOSHUA MEIGS provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Valley lost to Opelika. He completed seven passes for 95 yards and also ran for 59 yards. MEIGS's favorite target this week was HOUSTON BARNES, who caught four passes for 69 yards.
Thomas Ford was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 13 carries, he ran for 130 yards as Eufaula lost to the Bulldogs. Jaylin Robinson also contributed to the rushing game with 66 yards on the ground.
Valley's MEIGS and DAVION BAILEY have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region 2 in both passing and receiving yards. MEIGS has thrown for 661 yards this season, while BAILEY, a 5-foot-6 receiver, has 14 catches for 219 yards. JEFF HINES's team's Alvies leads the league in rushing yards with 399.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Tigers take on Marshon Harper's team. Eufaula is currently in second, while the Rams are in fourth.
The Wildcats extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Chris Mahand's team, 49-0. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
