The Belfry Pirates fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Phelps Hornets on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Hornets 71-66. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Despite the loss, Belfry saw an underclassman step up: Zade Rash scored 29 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Rash has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Eric Daniels, who scored nine points along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Belfry has not been sharp recently, as they've lost six of their last seven games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season. As for Phelps, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Belfry will take on Pike County Central at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Pike County Central's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last six contests. As for Phelps, they will head out on the road to take on Jackson City at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
