The Combs Coyotes will head out on the road to face off against the Cactus Shadows Falcons at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. Combs has given up an average of 7.2 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Combs lost 13-4 to Marcos de Niza on Tuesday. The Coyotes haven't had much luck with the Padres recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.
Angus Brumbaugh made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That triple was his first of the season.
Meanwhile, Cactus Shadows was not the first on the board on Wednesday, but they got there more often. They blew past Coconino 12-2. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won three matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.
Jack Scully was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off one hit. Those seven strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Brody Viavattene was a standout: he went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Will Stephens was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
Cactus Shadows always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .629. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Coconino only posted an OBP of .211.
The victory made it two in a row for Cactus Shadows and bumps their season record up to 4-2. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Combs, they now have a losing record of 1-2-2.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Combs hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. However, it's not like Cactus Shadows struggles in that department as they've averaged .386. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Combs might still be hurting after the 24-0 defeat they got from Cactus Shadows when the teams last played back in March of 2025. Can the Coyotes avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
