Basketball Recap: Vela Extends Winning Streak to Four

Vela came tearing into Friday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 29.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They strolled past the McAllen Bulldogs with points to spare, taking the game 44-27. Given the Sabercats' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 302nd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 643rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Vela was led to victory by Gg Betancourt and Aurora Guzman. Betancourt posted 14 points and five rebounds, while Guzman had 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava Tovar, who earned seven points and nine boards.

McAllen's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Miller Richey, who scored three points along with 23 rebounds and three steals. Those 23 boards gave Richey a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Aryanna Alba, who put up eight points.

Vela is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 23-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.9 points per game. As for McAllen, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 17-15.

Vela will take on Sharyland at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (Sharyland has won three straight at home, while Vela won four straight on the road), something that'll have to change. As for McAllen, they will square off against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. McAllen is facing Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial at the right time seeing as Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial is stuck on a 12-game losing streak.
