Freeport is 1-9 against Hononegah since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Pretzels will square off against the Indians at 5:00 p.m.
Freeport is headed into Monday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their seventh straight game on Friday. They came up short against Rockford Auburn, falling 10-3.
Freeport saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Quinn Krzeminiski, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Hononegah came tearing into Friday's contest with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Vikings 11-1. Considering the Indians have won six games by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Irelyn O'Brian and Zoie Calhoun made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, O'Brian tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Meanwhile, Calhoun pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. O'Brian has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. At the plate, O'Brian went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Calhoun got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run. Those three hits gave O'Brian a new career-high.
In other batting news, Addison Hulburt was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with two triples, three RBI, and one run. Those two triples gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Mali McMaster, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Hononegah was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .387. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .381 or higher in three consecutive matches.
Hononegah's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Freeport, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-13.
Freeport might still be hurting after the 13-1 loss they got from Hononegah in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Pretzels avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
