The Riverside Pirates will take on the Northeastern Jets in a tournament on Thursday. Riverside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Riverside will bounce into Thursday's matchup after beating Covington, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. The Pirates sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Buccs on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Pirates have posted since April 15th.
Riley Dillon spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Miah Carman, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Zoey Ransbottom, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Northeastern). They never let Catholic Central get on the board and left with a 17-0 win on Friday. The Jets haven't had any issues with the Irish recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Kylee Williams and Renna Kelly made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Williams pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Kelly didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. What's more, Williams posted three strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March. At bat, Williams went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs, while Kelly went 4-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run was Kelly's first of the season.
In other batting news, Northeastern got a massive performance out of Ashlynn Bowsher, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Those two stolen bases gave Bowsher a new career-high. Danielle Phelan was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
Northeastern kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Northeastern's win bumped their record up to 11-12. As for Riverside, their victory bumped their record up to 13-10.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Riverside hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Northeastern struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
