The DeKalb County Tigers are taking a road trip to challenge the Upperman Bees at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. DeKalb County's pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so Upperman's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
DeKalb County came out on top against White County on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fourth inning. The Tigers' pitcher stepped up to hand the Warriors a 10-0 shutout. Kora Kilgore was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 15 over six innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Bryna Pelham and Zayleigh Bain did most of the damage at the plate: Pelham went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double, while Bain went 2-for-3 with five RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. Those four hits gave Pelham a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Tatum Young, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
DeKalb County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .484. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .304 or higher in seven consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Upperman came up short against Clinton County on Saturday and fell 4-1.
Upperman saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brynn Wilken, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base. Eva Mathis also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
DeKalb County pushed their record up to 12-6 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Upperman, their loss dropped their record down to 4-13.
Upperman's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: DeKalb County has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .470. It's a different story for Upperman, though, as they've only averaged .291. Will they be able to contain DeKalb County's hitters?
DeKalb County took their win against Upperman in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 8-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
