Softball Game Preview: Washington Academy Raiders vs. Calais Blue Devils

The Washington Academy Raiders will head out to take on the Calais Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Washington Academy has three straight wins, Calais has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

While Washington Academy's victory against Foxcroft Academy wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Raiders skirted past the Ponies 5-3.

Bella Cirone made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 16 batters over eight innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than 11 strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. That hit was her first of the season.

Cirone wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Avery Libby, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run. Libby has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Meadow Rohde also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Jonesport-Beals hit Calais with a 14-run second inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Blue Devils lost 17-4 to the Royals.

Kayleigh Scott made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Natalie McDonald, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.

Calais' loss dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Washington Academy, their record now sits at 4-1.

Washington Academy skirted past Calais 6-4 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will the Raiders repeat their success, or do the Blue Devils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
