The St. Charles Bulldogs couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They took a hard 53-35 fall against Hemlock on Tuesday. St. Charles lost against Hemlock in their previous head to head back in January, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 60-26 score last time.
Despite the defeat, St. Charles saw an underclassman step up: Allison Zelinko scored six points along with eight rebounds and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendall Harger, who scored five points.
Hemlock had a senior duo take command as Lauren Borsenik dropped a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds and Hannah Borsenik scored 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
St. Charles' defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 0-1. As for Hemlock, the victory (which was their 18th in a row dating back to last season) raised their record to 1-0.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Charles will take on Vestaburg at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Vestaburg focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 on Tuesday. As for Hemlock, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Bullock Creek at 5:30 p.m. Bullock Creek will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Michigan Rankings (they are ranked 105th, while Hemlock is ranked 14th).
