Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Carey Blue Devils, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They received a tough blow on Friday as they fell 37-21 to Columbus Grove. Carey's defeat signaled the end of their ten-game winning streak.
Carter Smiley threw for 101 yards on four of 14 attempts. Tripp Phoenix was his top target, picking up 90 receiving yards. On the ground, Nathan Brodman rushed for 87 yards on only 11 carries.
Trenton Barraza was his usual excellent self, rushing for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Barraza has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last nine times he's played. Zach Reynolds did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 114 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Carey's loss dropped their record down to 10-3. As for Columbus Grove, they pushed their record up to 12-2 with that victory, which was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season.
Carey does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Columbus Grove will square off against Bluffton at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Bluffton knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matchups -- so hopefully Columbus Grove likes a good challenge.
