If the Athens Golden Eagles were riding high off their 57-26 takedown of the Oneonta Redskins last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Athens' tough 55-33 loss to Muscle Shoals on Friday might stick with them for a while. While losing is never fun, Athens can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 246th, while Muscle Shoals is ranked 34th).
Muscle Shoals' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Abby Pitman led the charge by scoring 20 points along with three steals. That's the first time this season that Pitman scored 15 or more points. Audrey Johnson was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Athens' loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-11. As for Muscle Shoals, their win bumped their record up to 10-6.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will take on James Clemens at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. James Clemens has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. As for Muscle Shoals, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Columbia at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
