Limon is a perfect 3-0 against Akron since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Badgers will square off against the Rams at 4:00 p.m. Limon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Limon is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Burlington just ended the team's ten-game winning streak on Tuesday. They lost 11-4 to the Cougars.
Limon saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Braxten Churchwell, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That double marked the first that Churchwell has hit this season. Another was Logan Haflich, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Akron hadn't done well against Haxtun recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Rams put the hurt on the Fightin' Bulldogs with a sharp 13-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Rams, who have now won nine games by nine runs or more so far this season.
Jax Kusel was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted over his last four contests. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI. He has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last six times he's played.
In other batting news, Akron let Caleb Poss and Kolten Randel run wild. Poss got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Randel went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave Randel a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Anderson Filla, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Akron always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .625. They are a perfect 11-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Akron has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.1 runs over those games. As for Limon, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Limon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Akron struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Limon's way against Akron in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Limon made off with a 12-5 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Badgers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
