Wilby is 7-1 against Woodland Regional since December of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Wilby Wildcats will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Woodland Regional Hawks at 6:30 p.m. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Wilby had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They breezed by Kennedy at home to the tune of 97-53. Given Wilby's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked seventh, while Kennedy is ranked 51st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Woodland Regional scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Wednesday. They claimed a resounding 104-67 win over Oxford on the road. That 104-67 margin sets a new team best for Woodland Regional this season.
Woodland Regional's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dean Accetura, who scored 27 points along with six assists and six steals. That makes it four consecutive games in which Accetura has scored at least 25% of Woodland Regional's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Stepputtis, who scored 26 points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Wilby's record is now 3-0. Woodland Regional's record is now 1-3.
Everything went Wilby's way against Woodland Regional in their previous matchup back in December of 2022 as Wilby made off with a 77-51 win. Will Wilby repeat their success, or does Woodland Regional have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
