Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Sam Leavitt of
West Linn is the 2022 MaxPreps Oregon High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior quarterback led the Lions to a 12-1 record and the Class 6A state championship.
Leavitt threw for 3,065 yards and 31 touchdowns against just five interceptions while adding 720 yards on the ground and eight more scores. The Lions ripped off 11 straight wins to finish the season.
In the state championship game against Sheldon, Leavitt helped avenge an early-season loss to the Irish by throwing for 131 yards and adding 178 yards on the ground in a 23-14 win.
Leavitt, who is the top-rated prospect in Oregon according to 247Sports, threw for 6,770 yards and 79 touchdowns in his career. He committed to Washington State in July over offers from Arizona and Florida State.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
