The power rankings have experienced a modest tune-up after last week's playoff battles. A special shoutout goes to Winter Park's senior Brian Gomez, who scored five total touchdowns in the team's most recent match.
Can't Touch This
Cocoa got a 63 - 7 win over Avon Park last week, and a key reason for the win was junior Willie Gaines. Gaines rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns. In fact, our algorithms singled out Gaines as one of the top players in the power rankings for the week.
This Week's Big Showdown
The confrontation between Viera (24th in the MaxPreps state rankings) and Plant (17th) did not disappoint. Viera was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as it fell 22 - 18 to Plant. The quarterback felt the defeat most of all -- literally. After six sacks, he is probably hoping to get a little more protection in the future.
No Stoppin 'Em
American Heritage and Bishop Moore went up, up, and away last week as they combined for the highest point total (83) among all power ranked teams. Bishop Moore has to be hurting after a devastating 56 - 27 defeat at the hands of American Heritage. The blowout was painful but not necessarily a surprise as American Heritage is ranked 7th in the MaxPreps nationional rankings, many places higher than Bishop Moore.
Next Week's Big Game
If you are itching to watch a first-rate contest, no game is supposed to fit the bill better than the one between Wekiva (3rd in the power rankings) and Winter Park (1st). Both teams are entering with last-week wins under their belts. Both the Wekiva and Winter Park defenses have allowed few points this year (averaging 9.27 ppg and nine ppg, respectively), so the teams might find scoring more difficult than usual this week.
