Covington and Munford are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2021, but likely not for long. The Chargers will head out on the road to square off against the Cougars at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Covington will be strutting in after a win while Munford will be coming in after a defeat.
The home team had won the previous five meetings between Covington and Millington Central, and Covington kept the tradition alive. The Chargers came out on top against the Trojans by a score of 8-5 on Tuesday.
Kinslee Hamm was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up five earned runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
Hamm wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was AJ McCommon, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2. McCommon also put up a triple, which was her first of the season. Another was Lyv Cromwell, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Covington hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Millington Central struck out eight times.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Munford took on Brighton on Tuesday. The Cougars fell just short of the Cardinals by a score of 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Cougars have suffered since March 11th.
Mia Griffin was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Harper Seiler, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Covington has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Munford, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 7-6.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Covington hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .423. However, it's not like Munford struggles in that department as they've averaged .346. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Covington came up short against Munford in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, falling 13-10. Can the Chargers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
