The Walnut Mustangs waltzed into their contest Thursday with nine straight wins but they left with ten. They enjoyed a cozy 61-42 victory over South Hills. Given Walnut's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 228th, while South Hills is ranked 817th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Walnut's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cory Fluker led the charge by scoring 18 points along with seven rebounds. Fluker set a new season high mark in blocks with two. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathan Yen, who scored 15 points along with five steals.
Walnut has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 15-5 record this season. As for South Hills, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 9-11.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Walnut will take on Bellflower at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for South Hills, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Diamond Bar at 6:30 p.m. on January 16th.
